'De Madrid al Cielo': Tourism and spectacle among Brazilian Musicians in Madrid. 

Tourism has, since the 1970s, been responsible for reproducing the urban experience in Madrid. This presentation explores how Brazilian migrants articulate diverse identities through the strategic employment of stereotypical images of the Brazilian (musical) nation. drawing on ethnographic data I address how such musicians navigate opportunities available in global cities to assert regional and racial difference.

Gabril Hoskingraduated with a Ph.D in ethnomusicology from Queen's University, Belfast in 2013. Having published on the Brazilian music scene in Madrid, he is currently researching music-making among Brazilians in London and writing a monologue on urban music-making among Brazilian transnational migrants.
